Edumacation: CFB Week 6/NFL Week 5

Five Things We Learned About College Football

1. Alabama is very good: In fact, you might call them "the best team in the country."

2. Florida is also very good: They may lay claim to this title as well. Mark down the first Saturday of December around 4:30 p.m. ET. You'll want to be either (a) in Atlanta or (b) very near a television. SEC title game, with more firepower than 120 Ludacris concerts.

3. Jevan Snead is the new Brady Quinn: Big in meaningless games, terrible with the spotlight on. So when everyone starts talking up his upside come March/April, just remember how good Quinn has been as a pro.

4. The non-BCS gets no love: See all these one-loss teams slowly creeping past Boise State in the polls?

5. Nothing that happens early really matters at all: Virginia Tech lost on the first night of the season. They are now a top-five team. Ohio State was utterly left for dead three or four weeks ago. They're a top-eight team and Tressel somehow has swagger back. USC was painted into a corner after losing to Washington. Now? "Maybe the best chance of all the one-loss teams to play for the BCS Title." Oklahoma has TWO losses and everyone is talking about their spoiler chances this Saturday in Dallas against No. 2 Texas. Overall takeaway: September is fun to watch, but it means nothing.

Five Things We Learned About Pro Football

1. The Giants and Vikings may be headed for the NFC Title game: Remember that 41-0 game those two played years back? Let's hope that doesn't happen again.

2. Mike Shanahan will get a job somewhere: Redskins are terrible. Now also consider this -- the Chiefs have no wins. They ALMOST beat the Cowboys. Who beat the Chiefs? The Raiders, who may be the worst team in football. Point being: Cowboys aren't great either. Shanny, to the NFC East.

3. The Broncos may be for real: ... or else NE's defense has just fallen off that much.

4. Things people forget, Volume 128, 347: In a column for ESPN.Com written two weeks after the Super Bowl last year, John Clayton said the Bengals should be considered the surprise team of 2009-10. Bang.

5. Nothing that happens early matters that much here either: Remember as recently as two weeks ago? "The Ravens are unstoppable!" (They're now 3-2.) "The Patriots are all the way back!" (They've lost to Denver and almost lost to Buffalo this year.) "The Steelers don't have it anymore!" (Their defense is terrifying.) Stop listening to people -- except us, about bars -- and watch the games.
