NFL Week 3 Action
The column is back for week 3 with a new and improved format. I have trimmed the fat and will bring you a steady diet of what you should be watching. Also included is where and when, and in due time all of your social habits will be determined at my command...err, suggestion.
San Francisco @ Minnesota (Sunday September 27th, 1:00pm) –
The 49ers have forced their way into the NFL's living room without even wiping their feet. The Vikings, owner of the Arc of the Covenant, have somehow been playing under the radar. The 49er's are riding Gore into the NFC West discussion. The Vikings have two impressive wins against two unimpressive teams and are looking to steal San Francisco's thunder in their home opener. I'll take the 49ers.
Take a shot... Whenever Frank Gore or Adrian Peterson make something look easy, when it absolutely isn't.
Where we are watching - Maker's Bar - 405 3rd Ave. - The San Fran crowd seems to take to this pleasant downtown bar. Cheer on your favorite underdog here.
Atlanta @ New England (Sunday September 27th, 1:00pm) –
The last time these two teams met, Richard Pryor was alive, we were scared witless about bird flu instead of swine flu, and no one had any reason to doubt that Michael Vick loved man's best friend. Now the teams are on opposite pitches. The Falcons are on an incline, looking like a team that can make some noise in the next couple years on the back of Turner and Ryan. The Patriots are looking like the spark may be gone. However, the game is at Foxboro and Randy Moss is out for vengeance so I take the Pats.
Take a shot... Whenever you or your friends can't keep a straight face while calling the Falcon's QB "Matty Ice'.
Where we are watching - Dempsey's - 61 2nd Ave. - The bartenders are good Irish fellas, and the wings are dynamite. They started to bring a small Falcon's crowd last year, maybe it carries over.
New Orleans @ Buffalo (Sunday September 27th, 4:05pm) –
With Drew Brees at the helm, the action will be high while the over/under is even higher. The Bills came off a heart breaker in the first week with a solid effort over the Bucs while only put the ball in TO's hands 5 times. We'll see if they go to him more often to counter the blistering passes that Brees routinely completes. I am taking the Saints all season.
Take a shot... Every time the Saints score 10 points, then immediately call a cab home.
Where we are watching - Bar None - 98 3rd Ave. - What this East Village bar lacks in polish, it makes up for in rabid Saints fans and great characters. Drinks are cheap too.
Miami @ San Diego - (Sunday September 27th, 4:15pm) –
Last week Miami lost due a flagrant error in timing the 2 minute drill, while San Diego fell to the Ravens while puting up a fight. Sproles is presenting himself more and more as the future of this franchise's running game, while Miami's offense didn't look half bad against the Colts. This should be an interesting one and I would bet the over, not that we endorse that or partake in that sort of thing. I pick the Chargers.
Take a shot... Every time Tony Sparano grins that stupid grin after making a mistake.
Where we are watching- Third and Long - 523 e 3rd ave - This after-work spot fills in nicely for Sunday football. They don't have any grub, but there is plenty of food in the neighborhood to hit at halftime.
Indianapolis @ Arizona - (Sunday September 27th, 8:20pm) –
The Cardinals were upset week one by the 49er's, who were supposed to be bad but are not, and then went on to easily beat the Jags, who were supposed to be good but are not. If that isn't enough, Kurt Warner is completing an extraordinary amount of passes while the backfield is struggling. I have absolutely no idea what to make of this team. Although I have seen the Colts adjust to a heavy pass offense, so even on short rest I'm taking them to win.
Take a shot... Whenever you can obviously see how badly Larry Fitzgerald wants the ball.
Where we are watching - The Bullpen - 1678 1st ave. - This bar is uptown but down to earth. The beers are well priced, there are plenty of screens and the snacks are delicious.
Carolina @ Dallas – (Monday September 28th, 8:30pm) –
Jake Delhomme was able to keep on lid on the INT's lst week, boosting his QB rating up to 82.2% in a loss to the Falcons. Hopefully Cowboy Stadium's unreasonably big HD screen will not distract him into returning to his old ways. Romo and the good ol' boys are looking for redemption after the G-men took all of the glory of opening of Thunderdome. I'll take the boys.
Take a shot... When they show Jerry Jones in his box. Drink twice if is apparent that he has no reflection.
Where we are watching - Brother Jimmy's - 181 Lexington ave. - A huge spot for Carolina sports, the Panthers should be out in full effect here. Come hungry.
