NFL Week 4 Action
Welcome to Week 4. The fog is lifting and we are starting to see who is good in actuality (Saints) and who is not (Jaguars). While the full picks have moved over to my blog in the regulars (join it!), We have streamlined this column here so you can hit the right bars, and drink the right amount (a lot.) Before we move on to this week’s solid action, I just wanted to point out some truths that have become evident to me in the young 2009 season:
- Cowboys Stadium is decadent. In the bad way.
- Jake Delhomme is not a good quarterback.
- Brett Favre has very obviously sold his soul to the devil.
- The Lions have singlehandedly saved the auto industry.
- Tampa Bay once again has a legitimate reason to ignore their football team.
BAL @ NE - (Sunday, October 3rd - 1:00 PM)
Last time the Patriots and the Ravens met Baltimore tried (and almost succeeded) in handing Tom Brady the first loss of their season. This time, things are the other way around. New England was stung by a sharp Jets team, but came back with a convincing win over a respectable Atlanta. I am taking the Patriots, if only on the weak schedule that Baltimore made it to 3-0 with. EDIT: I must have been drunk when I wrote that. My money is on the Ravens.
Take a shot: whenever Ray Lewis looks 10 years younger then he is…or 20 times crazier.
Where to watch: Pat O’Briens - 1701 2nd Ave - This bar is the stereotypical sports bar and makes no apologies for it. Get loud and proud here but be careful if you hail from Charm City, this is a Boston bar all the way.
BUF @ MIA - (Sunday, October 3rd - 4:05 PM)
An AFC East showdown between two teams who are good on paper, but miserable on the field. This is do or die for the Bills, considering that the Dolphins have already died. The loss of Pennington struck the killing blow for the Dol-fans. The focus is on the Bills, if they want to make any sort of impact this season, it has to start now.
Take a shot: whenever Henne misthrows a ball and they cut to a furious Chad Pennington.
Where to watch: Third and Long - 523 3rd Ave - Drown your sorrows with some Miami fans at this Murray Hill watering hole.
NYJ @ NO - (Sunday, October 3rd - 4:05 PM)
Probably the best game of the week, 3-0 teams matching up and the two quarterbacks that everyone is watching. The Saints monstrous offense slowed last week, but you have to believe that they are going to be in gear facing one of the NFL’s top defenses. Mark Sanchez is one more W away from full fledged NYC hero status. Bring on the fireworks.
Take a shot: For every running play. You won’t even be drunk by the 4th quarter.
Where to watch: Bar None - 98 3rd Ave. - What this East Village bar lacks in polish, it makes up for in rabid Saints fans and great characters. Drinks are cheap too.
GB @ MIN - (Monday, October 4th - 8:30 PM)
The Packers roll into the Metrodome, and they want blood from their former leader. Favre dismisses allegations of him wanting revenge as “ridiculous”, but sources say he has been watching a lot of Death Wish and Kill Bill. This first matchup should be interesting. Aaron Rodgers wants it more than anything, but when Favre walks into Lambeau it will pandemonium. This should be a good preview of what the cheeseheads can do to the powerful Vikings.
Take a shot: as often as you can. Be very intoxicated and enjoy the mayhem.
Where to watch: Lansdowne Road - 599 10th Ave - A great bar with plenty of screens. It is a Packer hangout, so don’t expect to hear much commentary over the boos.
