Preakness Stakes 2009
If you’re like me and some of the other women on the WwW team, you believe that anything boys can do, girls can do better. Testing this theory can often lead to playground fights, hair pulling, crotch kicking and the occasional bout with sexual magnetism. (Sidebar: who else is mad at their mother/childhood friends for reinforcing the misguided notion that boys are mean to you because they really like you? That’s a childhood belief fail.) Regardless, the women of WwW get our weekend in the sun as Rachel Alexandra, the fabulous filly who won the Kentucky Oaks by over 20 lengths, gallops onto the track with the boys to race for Preakness glory:
All this has happened with a fair bit of drama. Within days of her win at the Oaks, Rachel Alexandra was sold to Jess Jackson (of the Kendall-Jackson wine family, for you chardonnay fans) because her previous owner had no intention of letting her run with the big boys. Shortly thereafter, Calvin Borel announced he would opt to race Rachel Alexandra instead of Mine the Bird, the 50-1 long shot who road the rails all the way to Churchill Downs glory. In any event, as the 8-5 favorite for Saturday’s main event, Rachel Alexandra has a bull’s-eye on her back and we plan to have a front row seat to watch her rise to the occasion.
Where should you watch the Preakness?
Johnny Utah’s: Like the Derby, Johnny Utah’s will offer big screen coverage, audio and plenty of drink specials. And don’t forget, they have a mechanical bull.
Playwrights: Playwrights is still the place to watch the horses and the lazy-man’s fast track to the OTB.
