Superbowl XLIV

Before we delve into the only professional sports game that dubs itself “super”, we would like to touch on the holiday season.  It’s the time of year where spirits soar, friends and family reunite and the booze flows like my aunt’s tears after my drunk cousin told her she was starting to look like Ed Begley Jr.  In all the merrymaking and caroling and consoling sobbing family members it is very possible to get carried away, as your friends over here at Where We Watch did. Not that we do not condone holiday debauchery wholeheartedly, we would just recommended storing the password for your website in a safe place, and not solely in your brain which was recently rocked by a cocktail called the “Shaq Attaq”.  This particular brand of firewater included Bacardi 151, Wild Turkey, a floater of Everclear and possibly a bit of battery acid in it. Needless to say, in the morning I felt like I had lost a fist fight with Shaq himself. Excuses aside, we would like to apologize for the lack of updates through the postseason, we won’t leave you hanging like that again.

So we have arrived at Superbowl week. The holiest of the holy days.  There are still so many questions left.  Are the Saints good enough to claim the title on their first ever visit to the Superbowl? Will the eldest Manning and the Colts edge a bit closer to dynasty status?  Will Tim Tebow’s commercial include the word “firebomb”?  With 15 nationalities represented in the game, why is there not a single Mexican? (Thanks a lot, Mark Sanchez.)  Let’s break this down by team.

The Indianapolis Colts

This will be the Colt’s fourth visit to the Superbowl, every single one of them in Miami oddly enough. Maybe Peyton is just especially motivated by palm trees, seedy strip clubs and pure, uncut cocaine. The Colts are the clear favorites this year, however they were the favorites in Superbowl III.  So logically, all Drew Brees needs to do is guarantee a win, wear a fur coat on the sidelines and enjoy a touch of the sauce (OK, maybe a bit more than a touch.)

Deciding Factor - Dwight Freeney’s injury.  He is listed as doubtful, if he can pull through and…who am I kidding, the deciding factor is Peyton’s perfectly quaffed hair.

Where to Watch - Blackstones - 245 e 55th st. (btwn 2nd and 3rd ave)

The New Orleans Saints

The 2009 Saints have already cut their team misfortune quotient in half by winning their first ever AFC championship.  In this “nothing to lose” scenario, a Saints win would bring Bourbon street to Defcom 1 (or 5, whichever is the bad one.) My question is this, when exactly did we lose all of our faith in the Saints?  They opened the season with 13 wins, including convincing victories over the Eagles, Jets, Giants and Patriots. As soon as they lost to the Cowboys, by one touchdown no less, everyone jumped ship. While they slid at the end of the season, this OT win over the Vikes is a prescription for momentum.

Deciding factor - Defense.

Where to Watch - Bar None - 98 3rd ave (btwn 12th and 13th st)

Enjoy the big game, don’t get to sauced up, and always store your important passwords in a place you can find them. Cheers!
