The Lookahead: November 7-8, 2009
College Football Themes: November 7, 2009
1. Terrelle Pryor, coming home: Insofar as anything about HS recruiting isn’t exaggerated, Terrelle Pryor was—by all accounts—“the most highly-recruited HS athlete in American history.” He was from PA. Paterno doesn’t do home visits, yet went to Pryor’s crib. We all know what happened here. When he picked OSU, Pryor said PSU was “too country.” He goes to that country Saturday afternoon, playing inconsistently, against a defense that has about four-five guys going to the NFL. Should be fun.
2. Saban Bowl III: Who cares about Saban/LSU anymore? Not me! This is Mark Ingram Bowl I. He needs to go 100+ with 2 TD to keep the Heisman away from Colt and Tim. The Bama D can do the rest.
3. The 8pm games are brutal: If ever there was a week to think about some movie options—or bars just for the purposes of talking—this would be the week. Meh, UConn vs. Cincy could be OK.
4. Old Big 12 rivalries: Remember how cool Oklahoma vs. Nebraska used to be, what it used to represent? Uh, not as much these days. Here’s what we do mean, though:
5. Navy and ND: Fun rivalry game. Would love to see Weis drop this one. He won’t, though. Anyone else think Clausen’s Heisman candidacy is shot because of the Michigan and USC losses?
NFL Themes: November 8, 2009
1. Chargers vs. Giants FAIL: Tons of preseason magazines had this game as a Super Bowl preview. Um.
2. Eagles vs. Cowboys SUCCEED: This is a NFC East battle for supremacy, which a lot of people assumed it would be by this point. What’s the deal with Vick, though? What’s his role?
3. Texans SUCCEED? If the Texans want to get over the proverbial hump—they’ve been everyone’s “it” team for roughly 18 months—they absolutely need to win this game over the undefeated Colts on Sunday. I mean, Rockets… Astros… no NHL… Houston needs a (BAD PUN ALERT) lift.
4. Single-cover Moss: That’s what the Dolphins did last year against the Pats. Uh. 100+ and 3 TDs. Let’s hope Tony Soprano has a few more ideas.
5. Chiefs vs. Jaguars: I’d watch a test pattern over this game.
