The Musical Side of the Stanley Cup Finals
The Detroit Red Wings, according to the ever-descriptive 'Wiki Answers' website, do NOT have a theme song.
However, many D-Towners would differ, arguing that "Hey hey Hockeytown" is just that for the Wings:
... and with good reason (the whole "hockeytown" thing, that is), since even though MSU won it all in '00, the Pistons won it all in '04 (and took 7 games to lose in '05), and the Tigers made the '06 World Series ... well, if the Wings win this season, it will be their fifth Stanley Cup of this era. That's incredible. (Look for article in a bit on best organizations in sports.
The Pens are a little tougher to, ahem, 'pen' down. This clip is apparently their theme song:
It sounds a little bit like the opening to a bad 1980s cop-based TV show.
Speaking of throwbacks, another Penguins chant/fight song clip to check out is "Ice Ice Hockey," which is, well, interesting:
Your other main option is "Get ready to watch the Pens," a slight alternation of their theme song from last night. You can check out the '09 version here:
We love the Pens as an on-ice team, and we love the whole "Wayne Gretzky lost to the Islanders in his first Cup finals, then beat them in his second Cup finals" storyline that Crosby could now match, but honestly, down 2-0 after two nights of action, we'd almost recommend the ol' favorite "Don't Stop Believing." (Find your own version for that -- there's too many good celebrity karaoke editions of it to choose.)
While NHL chants don't inspire the same fervor that Man U's versions do, any excuse for us to give you the opportunity to hum a ditty that Don Johnson should be brandishing a gun on a boat over ... well, it just means we're doing our job.
