The Ten Spot: Weekend of 9-5-09
Five Back
1. The ACC is not good: In addition to Wake Forest losing to Baylor and Virginia Tech dropping the first prime time game to Alabama, did anyone catch Duke losing to Richmond? Absolutely depressing. More depressing: one ACC team and one Big East team will play in BCS bowls, leaving out either BYU or Boise State (likely) and two-three extremely good Big 12 or SEC schools.
2. Sam Bradford is hurt: Changes a good deal about this season, including Oklahoma vs. Texas as the biggest game—you now might argue LSU vs. Florida.
3. Northwestern is going to be one of those cheap 10-win teams: Gotta love the Big Ten.
4. Florida couldn’t cover the spread: There has to be one negative thing you can say about Florida at any given time, right? National sports media = does not understand this.
5. If you give Nick Saban four months for anyone, he will win: Interestingly, the complete reverse seems to be emerging as true for Bob Stoops.
Five Forward
1. In a heartbeat, the most interesting game of September 12 became Michigan vs. ND: Granted, they both waxed sub-par teams, but you gotta be more excited for that game than for OSU vs. USC, right? Right? OSU barely beat Navy and Joe McKnight looked absolutely beast for USC. That might be 35-3 Part II.
2. Trashing OSU, Part II: In mid-November, anyone else think this Michigan team will be comfortable enough in Rich Rod’s system to make “The Game” actually a game? Hmmm. Jim Tressel might want to prep his campaign for Governor of Ohio soon.
3. Forecasting jobs: With all the smoke blowing up asses about how good Mark Richt’s teams are (a) out of conference and (b) on the road, that Okie State loss has to be a disappointment, right? Right. Last year he was No. 1 preseason, had 2 of the top 12 picks in the NFL Draft anchoring his offense, and lost a bunch of games he shouldn’t have. HOT SEAT CALLING.
4. Baylor’s on the rise: This Robert Griffin kid is sick, in the good way.
5. Circle this date: October 2nd—Oklahoma at Miami. Could be a big Hurricanes win.
