The Weekend Focus: World Cup 2010 (USA vs. Ghana, WW II) and more
We have officially entered a tough time for sports -- that is, a tough time in any of the next three years, or the three that preceded this one (it's all a bit hazy, to be honest). The NBA draft is over; the NBA free agency period is cool, yes, but it's hard to hit a bar and wait for well-coiffed Ric Bucher to break some news on the ESPN crawl. (You could certainly try, however.) The NFL and college football don't legitimately return for close to two months. The NHL and college hoops (and the NBA) don't return until October. It's just MLB right now. Yea.
That is to say, it would just be MLB if this were another year -- but it's 2010, so you have the World Cup to focus on. This weekend has two pretty sweet matches (all four are pretty sweet, but two stand out): the USA vs. Ghana, following the Landon Donovan love-fest that was the Algeria game, and England vs. Germany; our only true advice for that game is to read the Wikipedia entries for "World War II," "Winston Churchill" and "Adolf Hitler" before heading out. Note: all three are extremely long.
In terms of where to watch these battles, USA vs. Ghana: anywhere. Even a dive without food service will have it on. Our guide to England is here; our guide to Germany is here. The other matches are surprising Uruguay (South America is 10-0-3 as I write this in the World Cup, which is disgusting in a good way) vs. South Korea. Korea Town's a good bet for that one (early Saturday start, so pace yourself), although the official guides can be found here (Uruguay) and here (South Korea). Mexico plays Argentina on Sunday as well. Mexico could be dangerous, but Argentina has looked stellar; Messi doesn't even have a goal yet, but he's hit woodwork about three times, so he may be due to break out. Argentina bars are here; Mexico offerings are here.
For no apparent reason, here's a video of Diego Maradona assuring the world he is heterosexual:
Enjoy the weekend, friends.
