Where to Watch Super Bowl XLV
- By Cameron on Tuesday, February 1, 2011
Try not to think about it. I know it's tough. It's on all of our minds. Football is almost over. There is only one glorious game left and it flies by faster than your wedding day (you'll be lucky to get a piece of your own nachos). The Packers and Steelers are two NFL institutions and in an old school game, one must do some old school drinking. But where should you wet your whistle for the big game? The pros here are Where We Watch have your answers below.
To help you out, here are some stories to get your bar discussions going...
If you find yourself in one of the Super cities...
If you happen to be residing in Wisconsin, there is no better to pace to watch than The Stadium View Bar and Grille. Voted one of the best football bars by Esquire and Forbes, this watering hole sit directly in the shadow on Lambeau. It's on Holmgren Way for God's sake, get out there.
Steel City natives should catch the game at Carson City Saloon. Voted best Steeler bar at MSN.com, they'll offer 5 for $15 buckets of Coors along with some other game time specials. A look at the site uncovers this gem - "If the opposing team picks off Big Ben's pass and is about to return it for a touchdown and a fan wearing a Carson City t-shirt runs out on the field to make a game saving tackle: All tabs that are in the bar will be voided (and we will bail the loyal fan out of jail!!!)" If that's not a good enough reason, I don't know what is.
Where We're Watching
212 West 79th St (Between Amsterdam and Broadway)
Blondie's is the rowdiest Pittsburgh Steelers bar on the island. They will be running their normal NFL specials, but you shouldn't need an excuse to show up if you own a terrible towel. Blondie's has also been known to raffle off a little Steelers memorabilia from time to time.
59 Christopher Street (Between Waverly Pl and Grove St)
Kettle of Fish is literally the ONLY place you should be as a cheesehead. The bar doesn't take reservations and the line to get in always starts early for regular season games. I can't imagine what time Green Bay Packers fans will queue up for cheese and summer sausage. Get there early.
785 9th Avenue (Between 52nd and 53rd Street)
Brickyard Gastropub sets up a Super Sunday Soup Slugfest. Green Bay is putting up a Cheddar, Beer, and Bacon soup, while Pittsburgh is bringing a Cheesesteak soup to the table. Both are served in bread bowls. Some serious soups for a serious game. Choose your sides wisely, my friends.
43 E 7th Street (Between 2nd Ave & Taras Shevchenko Pl)
Standings has a similar, albeit more alcoholic, Super Bowl face off. They will be serving craft beers from both cities. The Steelers are represented with selections from the Pennsylvania Brewing Company while The Pack is representing with beers from Steven's Point Brewery. Both are on tap and both are delicious.
64 Third Ave (Between 10th and 11th Street )
Village Pourhouse is making with the raffles once again, raffling off memorabilia, event tickets, tabs and anything else they could get their beer soaked hands on. The event will also be co-hosted by Jets players. They kept quiet about who it would be, but if it's Antonio Cromartie, don't expect to get a word in edgewise.
