UFC 115, to be held Saturday evening and forever known to many as "the re-drink after you drink for USA vs. England then sleep," will be the fourth UFC event hosted in Canada -- and the first in British Columbia, since they only passed a bill sanctioning MMA fighting in December of 2009. There's your primary historical talking point for the event.
The main event was supposed to be Tito Ortiz vs. Chuck Liddell, which would have provided the added bonus of a guy married to a porn star fighting a guy who has ostensibly slept with multiple porn stars. UFC's a classy joint. Instead, the main event will be Liddell vs. Rich Franklin. It's less compelling, although Franklin is an underrated 26-5 in mixed martial arts competition.
Also on the main card is Paulo Thiago (from Brazil, and 13-1) vs. Martin Kampmann (from Denmark, and 19-3) in a welterweight tussle. (Who says 'tussle' anymore?) The cool thing here is that, with the World Cup two days old when this card goes live, everyone will be obsessed with Brazil and, to a far lesser extent, Denmark (they're a sleeper team -- just watch). Brazil and Denmark, to the death! Well, no, not really. In fact, not at all. Hell, in soccer, they're not even in the same group. But that fight should be cool -- both guys are legit and the internationalness of it all (most of the card is US-based fighters) will be sweet.
