World Series 2009
The New Yorkers want to prove that they still have it. They are rooting for a team with the talent, the momentum and the passion. All they need is the execution. The Phillies want to prove they can do it again. Some, like my buddy's grandfather, want revenge from the 1950 fall classic when the Yankees swept the "Whiz Kids". Whichever way you go, there is no doubt this will be an interesting series. The Yankees won't be granted fundamental errors like the Angels gave them while the Phillies won't be able to overpower the Yankees as they did the greenhorn Rays last season.
I was lucky enough to attend Game Six of the ALCS on Sunday; I haven't felt that great in quite some time. There is something special happening in the new Yankee Stadium. Our new team doesn't just have numbers, it has personalities and character. Burnett throwing pies, Swisher throwing salutes and A-Rod just hanging back and doing his job has made this team into something distinctly new. We have some chemistry for once. Not to mention the postseason performances.
I am not saying that it will be easy. The Phillies have momentum spanning two seasons. They smelled weakness on the Dodgers and pounced on it. Besides the Yankees, they are maybe the hardest team to close out. Going into October, I remember hearing some hesitation about the Phils starters. No one is worried now. This series could go the distance, but for my blood pressure's sake I hope the Yanks can close it out in 5 or 6.
Where to Watch -
Yankees Fans - Dorrian's Red Hand - 1616 2 Ave - This bar was a Yankee hangout until management banned the players for bad behavior.
Phillies Fans - Wogies - 39 Greenwich Ave - This bar is Philly-centric featuring specials during the Eagles and Phillies games and a solid fanbase.
When to Drink -
Take one drink - Every time Joe Buck says something that as a Yankees, Phillies, or baseball fan makes you instantly and insatiably furious.
Take one drink - During game one whenever they reference Lee and Sabbathia being teammates on their minor league team, The Cleveland Indians.
Take one drink - Whenever Buck or McCarver makes a Halloween pun or reference in game three.
Take one drink - Whenever you see someone wearing the cap with Elmer Fudd earflaps. Double it if its a fan. Triple it if they skipped over earflaps and just went straight to Robbie Cano scuba gear.
And finally -
Take a shot - Every time you reflect on how lucky you are that the Rays aren't playing this year.
