2009 Wimbledon Championships
Monday, June 22nd marked the beginning of the 123rd playing of The All England Lawn Tennis Club Single Handed Championship of the World, otherwise known as The Championships at Wimbledon. Wimbledon stands above its three Grand Slam counterparts not just because it is the oldest tournament and the only one played on grass, but because of the prestige and pageantry surrounding the classic. Last year's thrilling final between Federer and Nadal was arguably one of the best tennis matches ever played and there is no reason to believe this year's final will be any different, despite Nadal's absence. Which leaves us with Federer, who heads to the English final with his first title at Roland Garros and with his biggest rival out of commission, so the path to his 15th Grand Slam seems wide open.
But who will he face? Could the three-seed Andy Murray make it to Centre Court and fight for a Men's Single's title for the Brits for the first time since Fred Perry in 1936? Murray has the promise, but nothing more than a 3 set lost to Federer in the 2008 US Open to show for it. Or will American heartthrob Andy Roddick show that he's more than just a pretty face and serve his way into the final and the possibility of an all-American singles finish.
Despite his recent missteps, Federer has looked rock solid thus far and it would take a massive swing of fate to cause the upset. Has the changing of the guard come at Wimbledon? Not if King Roger has anything to say about it.
Where will we be watching?
